We often hear the question, "What is Equity?" It's easy to forget that this crucial aspect of our work is sometimes misunderstood or even misrepresented in the media. Equity goes beyond fairness—it's about recognizing that each person or group has different circumstances and allocating the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. While this idea seems simple, its implementation requires intentionality and a commitment to understanding the diverse needs of individuals and communities. That’s why we sat down with experts in the field to ask them a simple question: How would they define equity for a middle schooler?
One expert explained, “Equity is like everyone having a pair of shoes, but each person getting a pair that fits them.” It's important to ensure everyone gets the support they need—not just what seems fair at first glance. Equity ensures that no one is left behind simply because they didn't start from the same place as others.
At Cross Cultural Community Services, we offer impactful training to help your organization foster diversity, equity, and inclusion, while addressing systemic racism, white privilege, and the challenges faced by refugees and immigrants.
