Achieving Health Equity with Older Persons (AHEOP)

Achieving Health Equity with Older Persons (AHEOP) is a collaborative initiative led by Cross Cultural Community Services (CCCS) in partnership with the Maine Council on Aging to address systemic inequities affecting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ older adults in Maine. We train organizations on how to work effectively with older adults and help them find the programs and services they need. Grounded in community voice, AHEOP is built on focus groups and stakeholder engagement that center lived experience, language access, and cultural identity. Our approach is rooted in equity and inclusion, empowering elders with knowledge of aging services, equipping providers with cultural humility, and expanding peer support and intergenerational connections. Through outreach, education, and advocacy, we are creating aging systems that are anti-racist, culturally responsive, and inclusive of all identities.

Our Objectives

Elevate the lived experiences and priorities of diverse older adults to guide systems change and ensure care is culturally and linguistically responsive.

Center the Voices of BIPOC and Immigrant Elders

Identify and address systemic obstacles, such as racism, language access, and economic inequality, that prevent elders from receiving fair, high-quality care.

Eliminate Barriers to Equitable Healthcare

Partner with healthcare providers, aging services, and community organizations to promote inclusive practices and drive policy and program improvements.

Strengthen Cross-Sector Collaboration

Testimonials

Working with Cross Cultural Community Services has been an absolute dream come true. Here at SMAA, we joyfully partner with them in a number of ways. Their team is generously collaborative and deeply open, always creating a space where ideas are welcomed, voices are honored, and meaningful connections flourish. I’m consistently impressed by how thoughtfully they facilitate meetings and conversations: each discussion feels inclusive, respectful, and invigorating, guiding participants with clarity and cultural sensitivity. Above all, they elevate the experience of working together by embodying true cross‑cultural understanding, and it’s truly inspiring to be part of their mission-driven community.
